U.S. Disease-care Spending On the Increase A March, 2001 report from the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) says that U.S. spending on disease-care is on the increase, fueled mainly by an increase in spending on prescription drugs. While the total for disease-care spending increased by 5.6% in 1999, the amount of money spent on prescription drugs increased by an astounding 16.9% to $100 billion. HCFA now expects that the amount of money spent on prescription drugs will increase by an average of 12.6% a year. By 2010, HCFA estimates, this will account for 16% of personal disease-care spending. By way of commentary, we feel that people would be better served by spending their money on true healthcare, chiropractic, rather than drugs that do not restore health but simply mask the symptoms. |
